Doug Cullen and Walter Berry also spend a chunk of the funds at "Alumni Meetings" at the Willows.

Student Fellowships

Each year, a fellowship is given to one of our talented students. This fellowship covers the cost of tuition and provides a stipend for a GSO student for one academic year.

    The 2004 Alumni Fellowship

    Dear GSO Alumni,

My name is Jason Krumholz.   I was the recipient of the 2004 Alumni award  which I received to pursue my PhD in Biological Oceanography here at the GSO with Dr. Candace Oviatt.  I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to the Alumni community for providing me with this support, without which it would not have been possible for me to attend the GSO.  While in an ideal world we could all go about our research without concern for funding, tuition, stipends, and the like, and simply conduct research for the sake of research, this is often not the case.  Your support allows a student like myself, who is not enrolling with a specific pre-funded project in line, to establish themselves in the GSO community, and seek out an individualized course of research and education best suited to their goals.

In my time here at the GSO, I have worked on a number of projects in Estuarine Ecology, while searching for what will ultimately become my dissertation topic.  This summer, I will be working with the EPA’s National Coastal Assessment (NCA) program, which monitors water quality and ecosystem health indicators in watersheds throughout the country.  Next fall, I will begin a year long assistantship measuring productivity  in Mass Bay, for Batelle and the MWRA.   I appreciate the opportunity you have given me through this fellowship to pursue my higher education, and thank you again for your generous support.

    Sincerely,

    Jason Krumholz

    STUDENT ALUMNI AWARDS

GSO Alumni Awards Send Students to All Parts of the Globe

GSO Alumni Awards are given to students every spring and fall. More and more students are asking for awards to attend conferences all over the world. Contributions to the annual GSO Alumni Fund Drive make it possible for GSO students to meet colleagues, network with potential employers, and present their research findings.

The Awards Committee awarded more than $3400 last spring to the following students:

Rebecca Asch received an award to attend a graduate student conference on Fisheries and Marine Ecosystems (FAME) hosted by Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. At the conference, held in May 2004, Rebecca gave an oral presentation based on her thesis research that stresses the need for habitat protection through ecosystem-based management to allow depleted fish stocks to recover. Her major professor is Jeremy Collie.

Amy DeLorenzo was given an award to help purchase a laptop computer needed to conduct field research on the North Atlantic right whale. Amy is assessing the habitat quality and nutritional intake of the right whale in Cape Cod Bay. Her major professor is Ted Durbin.

Tarquin Dorrington was awarded funds to attend and present a poster at the Aquaculture 2004 conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, in March. Tarquin’s research investigates solutions to the problems of disease in closed aquaculture systems. His major professor is Marta Gomez-Chiarri.

Amber Harris received an award to attend the 2004 American Geophysical Union Joint Assembly in Montreau, Canada, in May. At the conference Amber presented her thesis research on mantle plumes and buoyant upwellings in the Earth’s mantle that transfer heat to the surface and produce ocean crust while transferring chemical constituents to our hydrosphere and atmosphere. Her major professor is Chris Kincaid.

Tobias Kululka was given an award to Tobias presented a poster at the meeting on the determination of surface wave growth rates from viscous stress measurements. His major professor is Tetsu Hara.

Regina Rodrigues was awarded funds to attend the 2004 American Geophysical Union Joint Assembly in Montreau, Canada, in May. For her thesis Regina is conducting a numerical and observational study of the circulation that connects the subtropical and tropical Atlantic. Her major professors are Mark Wimbush and Lew Rothstein.

Nathan Vinhateiro received an award to travel to Tibet as part of an international collaborative project to investigate active mountain-building along the entire thickness of the lithosphere across the Himalayan-Tibetan zone of continent-continent collision. His major professor is Yang Shen.

John Wendelbo was given an award to attend the joint American Meteorological Society meeting of the 16th Symposium on Boundary Layers and Turbulence and 13th Symposium on Interactions of Sea and Atmosphere in Portland, Maine, in August 2004. John presented his research on the detailed mechanisms of gas and heat exchanges at the air-sea interface with a view of improving the current parameterization of air-sea gas exchanges on broader scales. His major professor is Tetsu Hara

Procedure

To apply, students complete the Student Awards Application. All completed
applications received will be considered by the Alumni Association Awards Committee.

Background

The GSO Alumni Association Student Awards Committee considers requests for
funds twice a year, in October and February. All GSO students are eligible
to apply. Typical requests include funds for equipment, supplies, travel,
publications, and other unfunded expenses. If funds are not available from
the GSO Alumni Association, every effort is made to find the money or
equipment needed elsewhere. Approximately $3,000-5,000 is available during
each request period. This amount is divided among four or five winning
requests. Funds for this program come from the contributions of GSO alumni
during the Annual Alumni Phonathon.
