Research

I work closely with colleagues and friends measuring gases in seawater, sea ice and glacial ice to better understand processes such as glacial melt and air-ice-ocean gas exchange. One of our main goals is to figure out how sea ice affects the polar ocean carbon cycle and how changes in sea ice will alter ocean carbon sequestration. We're hard at work trying to constrain the physical, biological, and chemical processes that determine the storage and flux of biogenic gases (namely CO2, O2 and DMS) between the polar ocean and the atmosphere. We use a spectrum of integrated techniques to infer these processes; these include interpretation of gases dissolved in water, remote sensing data products for the cryosphere, laboratory experiments and inverse models. We often use inert gases to distinguish between physical and bio-chemical processes. These gases include Ignoble gases such as SF6, SF5CF3, and N2O and the five stable Noble gases (He, Ne, Ar Kr and Xe). These gas tracers are useful in a broad spectrum of basic and applied science problems. Consequently, we are engaged in five subjects that relate to the impacts of climate change: (1) diffusive and interfacial gas transport in the sea ice-covered polar oceans (2) changes in the deep water formation rate in the Weddell Sea (3) ocean-ice shelf interaction at the toe of the Petermann Glacier, Greenland, (4) gradient flux estimates of photosynthesis and calcification over coral reefs and (5) The effects of drought and hypersalination on mangrove estuaries in West Africa. These projects are in varying stages of development and we are currently looking for inquisitive and enthusiastic participants as collaborators, lab members and boosters.
