Facilities for Physical Oceanographic Research at GSO
SCUBA diving is a normal part of research at the University of Rhode Island. All diving operations are under the control of the URI Diving Control Board. Divers must be authorized by the DCB before beginning any diving activities. The University of Rhode Island is an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. For information contact the Diving Safety Officer, Mark Gustafson, at 401/874-6205, fax 401/874-6574.
The Equipment Development Laboratory (EDL) is a design and manufacturing arm of the Graduate School of Oceanography. EDL was formed to help GSO faculty develop new scientific equipment and reduce the time for a new design to be deployed.
Users outside of URI may also contract for EDL services.
The complex of Marine Life Research Facilities with flow-through seawater at URI are the Ann Gall Durbin Marine Research Aquarium; the Ark Annex to the Aquarium; the Luther Blount Aquaculture Laboratory; the Eel Grass Research Facility; the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory; and the Seawater Pump House that provides flowing seawater to the entire complex.
GSO supports a large seawater facility and aquarium, the excellent Pell marine science library, and science facilities (large ones described, below). Some of our facilities are used for analytical services.
GSO supports unique laboratories and special equipment that can be accessed by outside users. These include:
Paleomagnetics Laboratory (contact Professor John King)
A number of research laboratories can provide analytical services on a per sample basis or by arrangement.
