Facilities

Narragansett Bay Campus

The campus consists of approximately 20 URI buildings that contain a mix of offices, research labs, classrooms, and meeting spaces. There is a total of roughly 300,000 square feet of built space, about half of which is contained in six major buildings: Horn Laboratory, South Laboratory, Watkins Laboratory, Center for Atmospheric Chemistry Studies, Coastal Institute, and Ocean Science and Exploration Center which houses offices of the Dean and administrative staff, as well as the Claiborne Pell Marine Science Library, National Sea Grant Library, and the Inner Space Center.

Affiliates, Partners, and Memberships

Several organizations have offices at GSO:

NOAA's Office of Ocean Exploration which manages the activities of NOAA's dedicated ocean exploration vessel, the Okeanos Explorer, homeported at Quonset Point, RI;

the National Park Service's North Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecosystems Unit;

Institutes, Centers and Offices

The Narragansett Bay Campus is the base for a number of institutes, centers, and offices that contribute to GSO's research, education, and outreach missions.

Marine Life Science

Marine Life Science Facility

The National Science Foundation provided funding to bring the Center into existence as a core facility for marine research. Located at the interface between Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound, the Center offers students and faculty modern laboratories for culturing marine organisms of all kinds and for investigating their environment and molecular ecology.

PO Facilities

Facilities for Physical Oceanographic Research at GSO

URI operates one of the finest deep-ocean research ships in the world. We have a machine shop, electronics engineers, and a marine technician support group.

Equipment Development

The Equipment Development Laboratory (EDL) is a design and manufacturing arm of the Graduate School of Oceanography. EDL was formed to help GSO faculty develop new scientific equipment and reduce the time for a new design to be deployed.

Users outside of URI may also contract for EDL services.

Aquarium

The complex of Marine Life Science Research Facilities with flow-through seawater at URI are the Ann Gall Durbin Marine Research Aquarium; the Ark Annex to the Aquarium; the Luther Blount Aquaculture Laboratory; the Eel Grass Research Facility; the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory; and the Seawater Pump House that provides flowing seawater to the entire complex.
