Blue water diving is required for this work. We will need a compressor and host
instituion diving suppport. Scripps vessels have supported my work very well
in this regard in the past. They can provide both a compressor and dive board
representative (resident technician) that can assist with the diving program.
I require a vessel with adequate space to lay out and support our 2 ROV systems
in addition to the required deckspace for diving work boats and deckboard
incubators. The ROV operations requires dynamic station keeping ability.
Previous work has been compromised by the wind drift that was a substantial
fraction of the ROV’s lateral speed. This severely compromises the depth to
which the ROV can operate and restricts the horizontal survey to less than our
minimum need. I will require CTD/rosette support including fluorescence and PAR
data. Different transects are required in the two years. One will be from HI
east towards the mainland, the other from HI west to about 175 W and then back
to port. It does not matter which transect occurs in which year.

Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
The cruise in the summer of 2003 has time constraints. The cruise cannot begin
earlier than mid-July.

institution diving suppport. Scripps vessels have supported my work very well

I require a vessel with adequate space to lay out and support our 2 ROV systems

I will be providing a 1/4 MOCNESS system. We will need a 1 m MOCNESS system
if it can be provided. Winch/conducting cable arrangements should include the
capability of towing both systems. Nutrient analysis is needed both deep
(>1000 m) and shallow casts. This will include nitrate+ nitrite, phosphate and
silicate. We will be conducting 5-7 midwater trawls for myctophid fish.
Pilskaln needs the hydrowire for the VPR, and a hydroweight of some sort to
hang
below the VPR to balance it; we need the crane for the ROV. The tether length
limits our operating depth; therefore the pilot and support equipment needs to
be as close as possible to where the tether will go over the side. As for our
power requirements, we need 208 vac, 3-phase at 10 kw for the
ROV.
We will need deckspace for circulating water incubators.
