Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
This request is to support an extensive onshore/offshore, active/passive NSF
Continental Dynamics project now funded for the Taiwan area. The first request
(~14 days in October 2007) is to deploy broadband ocean bottom seismographs
(OBS) for the start of the passive seismic program. I understand that the R/V
Melville is expected to be in the area at approximately this time, so we would
like to use that ship if possible. The next request (44 days in spring 2008)
is to perform active source MCS and OBS operations around Taiwan. This will
include onshore/offshore shooting and marine only MCS/OBS work. We request the
R/V Melville for fall 2007 to deploy 50 broadband OBSs in a passive array
around Taiwan. The ship size is dictated by the size and number of instruments
and the need for van space. This is not precisely known at present because it
depends on which instruments we get from the USOBSIP. We request the R/V Marcus
Langseth for the 2008 onshore/offshore active source work because we need its
seismic source and recording capabilities. The passive OBS recovery operation
is indicated by the third leg (October 2008).
Please note that some of the passive deployment or recovery work MAY be
provided by Taiwanese research ships (this has not been arranged due to lack of
information on the timing of the work). However, use of Taiwanese ships also
depends on the type of instruments we are allocated from the US OBS instrument
pool (OBSIP) and how they are deployed (from vans, interior ship lab, etc.).
Important note: The dates we have specified are important; our project leader
has had discussions with NSF, UNOLS, and OBSIP personnel because of the need to
coordinate marine and land programs and also have them occur during the proper
weather windows. We also have to accommodate the schedules of our
collaborators from Japan and Taiwan, who need to schedule their people and
equipment. The most serious scheduling problem is that TYPHOON season begins
in late May/June and worsens through the summer/early fall. A previous NSF
supported cruise in this area occurred in August and September 1995 and
experienced FIVE (!) typhoons. Much of the planned data were not acquired and
other data were of lower quality than desired due to the bad weather.
Unfortunately, winter weather, while less severe, is also poor for seismic data
acquisition due to persistent strong wind and rough seas.
Note also that the work will take place in both areas IN2 and NP10.
Further Notes: This ship request has been revised to reflect the changing
reality of OBS and ship availability. I would like to note that the project
started in September 2004 (!), so we would really appreciate it if no further
delays occur.
Final Note: Please contact us if there is ANY confusion about what we have
requested.
