----------------------------------
This will be an ROV JASON II expedition. We specifically request the THOMPSON
as the support ship because (a) it has already developed smooth operations with
the JASON II, and (b) the EM300 mapping system is ideally suited to making
basemaps with resolution optimal for ROV operations. The EM300 is the primary
factor in our request for the THOMPSON. Additional operations may include CTD
and dredging.
This special expedition is supported by the West Coast & Polar Region Undersea
Research Center (NOAA/NURP), and by the national NURP office (contact Barbara
Moore). Proposals have been solicited from U.S. academic and government
researchers and have been peer-reviewed. The expedition will include several
science programs. Funded awards will be notified in Spring, 2003.

Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
