Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
YES. When we were unable to get this cruise scheduled on Thompson in 2004, as
originally requested, we learned that Thompson and DSL-120 both could be
available for us in Winter 2005. Three of the PI's must request a leave from
normal teaching duties at their universities, and the lead PI must establish a
seagoing course for the Winter '05 quarter so that the students going to sea
can enroll. The paperwork to request university approval of these matters must
be filed at least 9 months in advance. We are going forward with these
requests early in 2004 to be ready for a cruise in Winter 2005. We ask that
UNOLS take into account the difficulties we will have in rescheduling our
leaves and course offering if the cruise is scheduled later than Feb 2005.
Also, because the cruise is long (35 days on station), we request that the
science party be permitted to board and/or disembark from the nearest port,
which is Galapagos.
