Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
Both Cruises are to recover floats air-deployed ahead of hurricanes. As such
the cruise track and duration will not be known until after the floats are
deployed. It could range from the western Gulf of Mexico to the Azores. Heavy
north Atlantic weather requires the use of a seaworthy ship of at least
intermediate size with an experienced crew, thus Oceanus. Smaller ships and
those from subtropical latitudes, particularly the Seward Johnson or Seward
Johnson II are not acceptable.
The Jan. 2004 cruise needs to be as early as possible in the year. It really
should be in November, but ONR is out of 2003 ship money. The November 2004
cruise needs to start after November 1.
