Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
This project will examine the spring-neap variability of a hydraulic control in
the Chesapeake Bay, using a combination of time series from a bottom-mounted
turbulence ADCP and shipborne mapping of the spatial setting of these
measurements. The month of April is necessary to accomodate Gargett's teaching
schedules. To accomplish the science involved, it is necessary to have a
minimum of 14 days of science time and for that time period to be arranged
properly with respect to tidal variation. For this reason, one of the 2
specific time periods requested is essential.

Other Special Equipment; Equipment Requiring Special Handling, Storage or
Installation; Comments:
-----------------------
Special equipment: We will install a temporary mooring with a surface buoy
containing a medium-range radio communication link. Divers will then place and
adjust a bottom package containing the turbulence ADCP, and run the instrument
data cable to and up the mooring, plugging into the communication package. Once
this specialized mooring is in place, the ship will run continuous spatial
ADCP/scanfish surveys around it, taking care to remain within radio contact.
Comments: this request was not submitted at the time of proposal submittal
(summer 2001) because at that time ODU was building a research vessel which I
believed would be sufficient for this work. Unfortunately the reality when
delivered is basically a day-boat which is not suitable for 24-7 operation over
2 weeks. Given these circumstances, I talked this over with the project's NSF
manager (Eric Itsweire) and he approves of the present request.
