The study area extends from 5°N to 5°S and from 140°W to 130°W. This includes
portions of regions NP12, SP2 and SP3 on the naval chart.
We'll require the vessel's radioisotope van and will also have two vans that
will be shipped to Honolulu by project personnel: one trace-metal clean van and
one for measurement of CO2 system parameters.

Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
The project centers on biogeochemical responses to equatorial upwelling and
tropical instability waves (TIWs). The optimal time window for these processes
in the Pacific is October/November and we requested cruises during that period
in two consecutive years, 2004 and '05. NSF moved our 2004 cruise to
December'04/January '05, very late in the season for equatorial upwelling and
probably entirely out of the season for TIWs. THIS GREATLY INCREASES THE
IMPORTANCE OF A CRUISE IN THE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER TIME WINDOW IN 2005.
This request is coordinated with a request for ancillary use of the vessel
(UNOLS request ID#20040212131842II, Nicholas S. Fisher Principal Investigator).
We request principal use of the ship for our ongoing, funded project. The
Fisher project, if funded, will further the scientific objectives of our
project and will require two berths on the ship. We will gladly coordinate
with Fisher on all scientific and logistical elements of this cruise.
The project includes more senior personnel than could be listed in the section
above. The others are:
Richard A. Feely, NOAA/PMEL, (206) 525-6214, feely@pmel.noaa.gov

Please explain:
---------------
Two scientists from l'Institut Universitaire Europeen de la Mer (IUEM) in
Brest, France will participate (currently identified by IUEM as Dr. Philippe
Pondaven and Mr. Rudolph Corvaisier). International collaboration is an
essential component of all NSF Biocomplexity projects.
