Proposal Title:
---------------
The DART Project is an ongoing effort to maintain and improve the capability
for the early
detection and real-time reporting of tsunamis in the open ocean.
Oerated by NOAA's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), DART is essential to
fulfilling NOAA's national responsibility for tsunami hazard mitigation
and warnings.
Project goals are the:
Reduction in the loss of life and property in U.S. coastal communities.
Elimination of false alarms which result in high economic costs for
unnecessary evacuations.
DART stations have been sited in regions with a history of generating
destructive tsunamis to ensure early detection of tsunamis and to acquire
data critical to real-time forecasts.

Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
Special consideration is needed for the operational time-frame to conduct
safe buoy exchanges. Special consideration is also requested due to the
operational life cycle of these buoys.

Significant quanties of "D" Cell alkaline battery pucks
be utilized on this cruise. Precautionary measures will be
taken to store and isolate these exhausted batteries upon
removal from the buoys. The battery pucks will be returned
to the NDBC post cruise where they will be properly disposed.
