Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
This work will be part of the ONR AESOP experiment and is closely
coordinated with measurements being made on R/P FLIP. We will be
deploying expendable current profilers (XCP) and a tethered
microstructure profiler in several 12-hour timeseries patterns to
resolve the 3-d structure of currents, turbulence, and isopycnal
displacement of the internal tide. Our scheduling is quite flexible,
but must meet certain key requirements. The core measurements (two
12-hr expendable surveys separated by 12 hours or more) need to be
within 2 days of the strongest (spring) semidiurnal tidal currents,
occurring on (in order of preference) Aug 12, Aug 25, July 27, and Sep
9, 2006. Any of these dates is acceptable, but the 2 core surveys should be
while FLIP is in place and sampling. The remainder of our time will
be used for (non-expendable) microstructure profiler surveys. We are
requesting the R/V Pt. Sur, as it's size and location are
ideal. However, this work could be done from almost any
vessel, possibly in conjunction with other investigators in AESOP
or other programs in Aug 2006. We can piggyback on another
cruise as long as we can get 2-4 days of ship use and don't need to
stay out more than 14 days total.
We also have a pending NSF proposal to do additional internal tide
surveys in Monterey Canyon. If that proposal is funded, a combined cruise
spanning
two spring tide dates (one while FLIP is in place) would be ideal.
