Revised Proposal is in connection with the following award of ship time:
To: C. Charles
Subj: UC Ship Funds request for use of R/V Roger Revelle in Indian Ocean,
2007, for study of sea level and climate history from sampling submerged coral
reefs of the west/central Indian Ocean
On advice of the UC/Revelle Ship Funds Panel, I am pleased to respond to your
request of March 31, 2006 with the assignment of 24 UC-funded days of use of
R/V Roger Revelle in the Indian Ocean in 2007. This includes pro-rata port
call days. A tentative schedule shows departure from Colombo on 6 August,
arrival in Mahe, Seychelles on 26 August, both at standard times of day. This
may not afford you all the time you sought to accomplish all your desired
sampling, but it is all that can be supported on grounds of cost and
scheduling.
The terms of this award and related considerations are:
1. Please complete a standard ship time request form if this has not been done
already:
http://www.gso.uri.edu/unols/ship/mainmenu.html
Please remain in contact with the ship schedulers to firm up the notional
timetable mentioned above. Be aware that the UC-supported time for your
project and others must fit reasonably into the overall, mainly
federally-funded, schedule of the ship for the year, and the latter is still a
work in progress to a degree, via the usual UNOLS mechanisms. Subsequent
changes are not out of the question.
2. The award is for the UC-funded days and for the associated standard
technical support charge for those days; this normally provides the service of
two STS technicians at sea. It appears from your request that this standard
charge will cover any equipment and services you envision, but you should
consult with Woody Sutherland, manager of STS, to make certain that this is so.
It is expected that other costs beyond the ship time and standard technical
service will be met from other fund sources. The assignments of UC-funded time
to your project and other succesful requests will put strong pressure on
available funds, so meeting other needs from other funds is very important, as
anticipated in point #5 of my intial Feb. 24 call for requests. As also
anticipated there, it is hoped that assignment of the UC ship-time and
technical service support now will give you sufficient lead time to seek and
secure any other support needed. You estimated such other support in your
request.
3. In the end, due to the large number of requests for UC ship time submitted
in this case, the success rate was only about 15%. I would therefore encourage
you to be as open and accommodating as possible, subject to proper prosecution
of your own project, to any non- or minimally-interfering ancillary projects
and colleagues that may approach you seeking to "piggyback" on this rare
geographic opportunity, particularly so for any elements of research and
education stemming from the unsuccessful requests.
4. As a condition of UC funding, the Panel now requires post-cruise submission
of a brief report on cruise activities and participants, in order to build a
better future database for examining how effectively these funds have been used
over time. Particulars are appended. Please note that in any particular case
some or many of the questions will not apply; we fully expect that some of your
entries will be "N/A."
Best wishes for a successful cruise,
Sincerely,
Bob Knox
