this expedition will combine water column CTD/niskin bottle sampling, water
column acoustics, seismic profiling, heat flow probing, electromagnetic towing,
and piston coring. Geochemical sample analysis instruments will be setup
onboard. All geochemical, heatflow and coring systems can be accessed.
Equipment on board that will meet the expedition plans will be selected.
For this cruise plan the selection of a ship is based on the current knowledge
of availability. A comparable resaerch vessel could provided the needed
support

Are there special considerations of the science party or cruise scheduling?
Consider science time constraints; coordination of equipment shipping;
two-ship operations; weather windows; mooring turn-around; teaching schedules
and others that will affect scheduling decisions.
-------------------------------------------------
There is currently strong international interests in this expedition. The
regions of interest include the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. There is also
interests in water column and sediment scientists that will be mixing
geochemistry, biology and geophysical parameters. Measuring the flux of
methane to the atmosphere will also be addressed with towed instrumentation
provided by scientists at TAMU. There may be a plan to split the cruise into
two sections for maximum efficiency. This decision will determine the funding
supporting the different participants.

Other Special Equipment; Equipment Requiring Special Handling, Storage or
Installation; Comments:
-----------------------
This expedition will combine water column CTD/niskin bottle sampling, water
column acoustics, seismic profiling, heat flow probing, electromagnetic towing,
and piston coring. Geochemical sample analysis instruments will be setup
onboard. There is experience combining these parameters in field work off
Chile, New Zealand, and Gulf of Mexico. Note that piston core and vibra core
will be used depending on the location.
Space in the participant page did not allow for an overview of the entire
research team. Currently 10 senior researchers from 5 countries have indicated
strong interest in participating in this expedition. Several have already
received funding committment for participation. The remaining will be
determining their level to participate over the next two months. In addition
discussions during recent international research conferences in Oslo and Bergen
Norway have initiated additional collaborations in this expedition.
The budget for this proposal is not throughly represented in the budget page
because of the complex budgeting contributed from the individual research
teams. At this time DOE/NETL,USGS and ONR have committed funding to the
research effort. Planning for funding is being discussed with industry, NOAA,
MMS, ONRGlobal, Shell and researchers in Europe. As well a proposal will be
submitted to NSF in mid August. Contributions will include funding and support
through providing data and equipment. The funding plan will be completed in
the next two months, with minor changes afterward. Part of this cruise is
planned to determine research submarine dive locations in the Beaufort Sea for
the NOAA-NURP program during 2010. NRL has a strong interest in this part of
the program because they are taking the lead with NOAA for the dive locations
and plans. National Geographic is also considering joining this 2010 fieldwork
planning.
