Teaching
Here are descriptions for the courses I offer.
Modern oceanographic imaging & mapping techniques – OCG 555
Description:
An overview of many common acoustic mapping and photographic imaging techniques used in modern oceanographic research. The goal of the class is to introduce concepts which are becoming more prevalent in both industry and research, present their basic operating principles and indicate the current direction of research in these areas. The course will be taught to accommodate both engineering graduate and senior level undergraduate students, and science focused graduate students interested in an overview of this broad field. Will be offered as OCG 555 (formerly OCG 594) starting Spring 2011. (3 units).

(The Ocean Planet) Section on Ocean Exploration - OCG 110
Description:
This team-taught, case study course will describe, examine and dissect authentic ocean discoveries where URI faculty have been actively involved. The team includes ocean explorers (Ballard, D’Hondt, Buxton, Mather) and an ocean instrumentation specialist (Roman). The course includes four modules that examine fundamental topics in ocean exploration and meld sub-disciplines of oceanography (biological, chemical, geological, physical, archaeological and engineering). The modules are focused on deep-sea archeological discovery, the discovery of hydrothermal vents, the discovery of life beneath the seafloor, and the discovery of large-scale human impacts on climate and ocean chemistry. These topics are chosen to place the understanding of fundamental ocean/earth processes (e.g., plate tectonics, global ocean circulation, biological diversity, global chemical cycles) into a conceptual context. (3 units).

Geological Oceanography - OCG 540
Description:
Geological Oceanography (OCG 440/540) provides an overview of the geology and geophysics of the ocean basins, including their structure, plate tectonic history, volcanology, geochemistry, and sedimentary stratigraphy. The oceanbasins are also discussed in the context of the overall structure of Earth and the history of Earth's climate over the age of the ocean basins. I help team teach this class with four other GSO faculty members.

Introduction to Ocean Engineering - OCE 101
Description:
Overview of ocean engineering topics pointing out the common areas with other engineering branches but emphasizing specific ocean applications and connections to marine science. (1 unit).
