SS05 Thin Layers: Formation, Maintenance, and Impacts on Water Column Ecology
Session Schedule and links to Abstracts
Tuesday morning, 2 February, 08:30, Hilton Mesa A
Recent studies have documented the existence of thin layers of phytoplankton, microzooplankton, and zooplankton. The layers can be persistent in time and extensive in space, with vertical scales ranging from several cm to a few meters and horizontal scales of km. Such layers affect optical and acoustical properties of the water column and studies to date indicate that they can be loci of intense biological activity. Their impact on water column ecology is just beginning to be examined. The session invites papers on the formation and maintenance of thin layers and the biological processes occurring within and around layers. Studies performed in the field, in the laboratory, and using modeling techniques are invited. Those with an interdisciplinary focus are encouraged.
