Areas of Specialization

Research

Dian Gifford's research interests include biological oceanographic processes, with emphasis on zooplankton. Her research is focused on the ecology and physiology of heterotrophic planktonic protists and their functional roles in pelagic food webs culminating in fisheries, on grazing processes in pelagic ecosystems, and on the trophic interactions between heterotrophic protists and metazoa. She also develops methods for the laboratory culture of planktonic ciliates and heterotrophic dinoflagellates.
