Diving Education & Training


URI's Diving Safety Program includes both for-credit academic coursework, and not for credit professional development training in dive accident management and specialized modes and procedures. Leadership level training is conducted through a mentorship process with the Dive Safety Officer or other approved staff instructors.

Current for-credit courses involving diving include:

  • AFS270: Basic SCUBA and Introduction to Research Diving
  • AFS433: Research Diving Methods
  • HIS396: Maritime History & Underwater Archaeology Field School

Current not-for-credit courses for diving include:

  • Basic SCUBA diving
  • Advanced SCUBA diving
  • Diving First Aid, CPR, AED, and O2 adminsitration
  • Dive Rescue
  • Nitrox
  • Drysuit
  • Night, Deep, Navigation, UW Photography, or other specialties
  • Research Diving
  • Divemaster
  • Instructor Develompent Course
  • Other specialized training - inquire with DSO as needed
