Areas of Specialization

Research

I am broadly interested in the ecology and evolution of planktonic marine diatoms. I have recently been involved with studies of the fine scale vertical distribution of phytoplankton in Monterey Bay, CA. My dissertation research is focused on the bio-optical properties of diatoms and how these characteristics relate to the growth, distribution and phylogeny of species.
