Equipment Development

The Equipment Development Laboratory (EDL) is a design and manufacturing arm of the Graduate School of Oceanography. EDL was formed to help GSO faculty develop new scientific equipment and reduce the time for a new design to be deployed.

Users outside of URI may also contract for EDL services.

EDL has extensive high tolerance machining capabilities as well as welding, CAD design and assembly capabilities. EDL projects have ranged from construction of delicate analytical instrumentation to fabrication of custom laboratory and sampling devices, to large coring systems.

EDL also operates a pressure test facility. The pressure test facility consists of three pressure vessels and supporting instrumentation.

Benthos hydrostatic tank:
Cavity of 9 inch diameter,
49 inches high. Maximum pressure 15,000 psi.

Radome Hydrostatic Tank:
Caviy of 27 inch diameter, 7 feet high. Maximum pressure of 3,000 psi. Has 4 electrical penetrators, 1 hydraulic penetraor, optical window for internal illumination for video.

EDL Hydrostatic Tank:
Cavity of 14 inch diameter, 12 feet high. Maximum Pressure of 10,000 si. Has 8 electrical penetrations, optical window and internal illumination.
