GSO Goes to Sea: R/V Trident, in 1961, had one of the largest scientific laboratories of any research vessel in the country. On her voyage to GSO, her cargo included household articles and automobiles for new GSO faculty members moving from San Diego. Courtest URI Library Special Collections Archives.

When R/V Trident returned on October 18 [1968] from a cruise in the Caribbean and Sargasso Seas, she had logged 215,204 land miles as a research vessel for the University in over six years. This is the equivalent of eight and one-half trips around the world at the equator. Trident came to Rhode Island from San Diego on September 15, 1962. In her career with the Graduate School of Oceanography she has sailed the Caribbean, the Gulf of Panama, and waters off New England, South America, Iceland, Newfoundland, the West Coast of Africa and Spain, with a brief excursion into the Mediterranean. She is presently averaging about 250 days a year at sea.
