Above are skeletons of some of the 70 species of planktic foraminifera that existed just before the Yucatan impact. Only three or four species survived the impact including the species at the upper right. All of the survivors were characterized by very small and simply shaped skeletons. This species was common for thousands of years after the impact. (The white scale bar at the bottom center is 100 micrometers.)
