Refit for Research
Ocean-going vessels generally have a lifetime of about 30 years. At about 15 years, it is judicious to update aging systems. The R/V Endeavor celebrated mid-life in the spring of 1993 with a $2 million retrofit. Her profile was significantly altered when the twin sail-like stacks were removed, the bridge was moved higher and forward, and new laboratory space was created. Internal changes included new and expanded scientific laboratories, an enlarged wet lab that permits scientists to sample more easily in inclement weather, and an improved galley. The bridge now has a communication center chart room on the starboard side aft with advanced communication devices and a view of over-the-side operations.
