Marine Research
The Graduate School of Oceanography has a diverse assembly of research activities
in all the major disciplines of oceanography. During 1994-96, there were more
than 400 active research projects. GSO researchers received 356 new awards totaling
more than $36 million. Activities range from pollutant concentration measurements
in Narragansett Bay sediments in support of clean-up efforts to testing the
theories of interactions of wind and waves on the ocean surface.
GSO's long-range strategy entails initiatives in two
major areas. Within GSO's initiative on Global Geochemical Systems, researchers
have been active in working toward a better understanding of the earth's climate
and weather, addressing questions at different time scales. On the order of
a few days, GSO researchers are working to better model the interaction between
the ocean and hurricanes, leading to improved forecasting capabilities for hurricane
movement and intensity.
Over a longer period of time, GSO investigators are
sampling air trapped in the snow pack at the South Pole. The trapped air contains
a record of concentrations of important natural and man-made chemicals that
were in the atmosphere up to about 100 years ago. The record of atmospheric
concentrations of chemicals will provide a better understanding of the processes
controlling the earth's climate and its response to man-made changes in the
atmosphere.
For an investigation of climate change on a much longer
time scale, GSO researchers are drilling cores in a limestone-shale deposit
in northern Italy, the result of submarine deposition of debris from organisms
living in the sea about 120 million years ago. The deposit being drilled represents
10 million years when the earth's climate was changing from a cooler period
with seasons, similar to today's climate, to a period when the earth was considerably
warmer. It is believed that atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide were
considerably higher than they are at present. The core should give a very detailed
record of geochemical "signatures" of climate-related events that
took place during the warming period, and help determine the changes in the
ocean and climate which preceded and followed the warming.
The other GSO initiative focuses on the coastal environment.
A significant portion of GSO's coastal activities are directed toward understanding
the Georges Bank ecosystem so that we can understand the prospects of recovery
of the traditional cod and haddock fisheries and if the stocks do recover, how
the stocks can be better managed. GSO investigators are studying many aspects
of the ecosystem. Physical oceanographic studies are determining the development
of stratification and mixing rates and their effect on the ecosystem. Others
are studying the zooplankton on the banks. Zooplankton are a major food source
for the desirable fish species. Other investigations seek to understand predator-prey
relationships in the Georges Bank ecosystem. Particularly interesting are the
studies on floating hydroid colonies. Their role in the ecosystem was previously
unexplored despite the fact that they are, in their medusa stage, common and
frequently very abundant.
