Areas of Specialization

Research

Brian Heikes' research is on the measurement and interpretation of photochemically reactive compounds. Such compounds define the lifetime of pollutant and natural compounds in the air, trace atmospheric motion and mixing, and characterize the exchange of material across air-land-ocean interfaces. Support for this work has come from federal agencies and private foundations.

Teaching

Brian Heikes mentors graduate students in atmospheric and marine chemistry research and formally teaches graduate courses in atmospheric and marine chemistry, biogeochemistry numerical models and chemical measurements. He has taught undergraduate courses in oceanography. He has also guided several undergraduate research experience projects (REU's) in atmospheric and oceanic chemistry and climate.

Outreach

Several of the graduate students advised by Brian Heikes have worked on thesis projects co-advised and funded in partnership with the private sector. He has been a science resource for K-12 educators and students. His research projects often include faculty from traditionally undergraduate institutions of higher learning.
