Thank you for your interest in supporting the Graduate School of Oceanography. We count on gifts to the GSO to maintain and enrich the educational experiences of our students and to support our research and outreach programs.
Friends of Oceanography
Founded in 1986 on the occasion of GSO’s 25th anniversary, the Friends of Oceanography has played an important role in supporting GSO’s educational, outreach, and research activities and building strong ties between GSO and its neighbors, alumni, partners, and supporters.
GSO is the Ocean State’s center for marine studies, cutting-edge research, global outreach, and is a source of pride for Rhode Islanders and University of Rhode Island alumni and friends alike. Our distinguished reputation is built upon more than half a century of research, education, and outreach. We educate world-renowned marine scientists, explore the depths of the oceans, inform the public on ocean issues, and apply state-of-the-art science to better predict hurricanes, build resiliency in coastal communities in response to sea-level rise and extreme weather events, develop fisheries and area management plans, and support national security.
The Friends of Oceanography program plays an important role in supporting GSO’s education, outreach, and research activities. All contributors to the University’s Fund for URI: GSO and other GSO funds are recognized as Friends of Oceanography, and have opportunities to learn about the rich variety of GSO’s programs and their impact on our state and nation. Your contribution will enable us to provide for:
- Student fellowships
- Acquisition of specialized research equipment
- Campus improvements
- Social and educational programs
- Visiting speakers
- Institutional advancement activities
- Funds for the Dean to deploy for projects of opportunity
- Publications associated with research and other activities taking place at GSO
All Friends of Oceanography are recognized in our publication for Friends and Alumni, Aboard GSO, as well as in the GSO annual report. In addition, those who donate $1,000 or more are recognized as members of the Trident Society.
GSO Alumni Association
Since its inception in 1961, GSO has graduated more than 950 students with Ph.D., M.S., and M.O. degrees. This tight knit group of staunch supporters of GSO live and work all around the globe. While 44% of GSO’s alumni have careers in academia, 23% work in government positions, 16% in industry, and 3% in the military. The GSO Alumni Association supports GSO through donations to the annual fund and volunteering time and energy to further the GSO Alumni Association’s mission, which is to support students through fellowships, Pell Marine Science Library purchases, and funds for student travel, equipment and supplies.
All GSO Alumni donors are recognized as Friends of Oceanography and noted in our publication for Friends and Alumni, Aboard GSO, as well as in the GSO annual report. In addition, those who donate $1,000 or more are recognized as members of the Trident Society.
GSO is recognized as Rhode Island’s center for marine studies and cutting-edge research and outreach. As such, GSO has developed a Corporate Affiliates Program to provide business leaders an inside perspective into the groundbreaking research, technology and initiatives taking place across the campus.
As members of the affiliates program, companies will be given first access to innovative research and technical developments, as well as the opportunity to engage with leading faculty, scientists, staff, students, and resources for mutual collaboration.
All annual contributors to GSO at the leadership level of $1000 or more are recognized as members of the Trident Society, named for GSO’s first ocean-going research vessel, the R/V Trident.
