Under Pressure: The Story of Our Nation's Waters
As part of their national aquatic resource surveys, the U.S. EPA recently determined that over half of streams nationwide are unsuitable for aquatic life. EPA senior policy advisor Dr. Ellen Gilinsky will describe the surveys and how the results can be used to prioritize water management.
All lectures will be held in the Coastal Institute Auditorium at the URI Narragansett Bay Campus, 218 South Ferry Road, Narragansett, RI.

Scientists and Journalists: Getting the Point Across

Rethinking the Global Fisheries Crisis
Dr. Olaf Jensen, Rutgers University, will discuss a new global assessment of wild fish populations that is overturning conventional wisdom about how fisheries operate and what we can do to ensure that they continue to provide food and other ecosystem services on a sustainable basis.

Building Resilient Coasts: Lessons from Hurricane Sandy
Massive storms like Hurricane Sandy have sharpened the need for climate adaptation measures in coastal communities. This lecture will address the combination of research, management, and outreach tools necessary to craft responses from local to national scales.
All lectures will be held in the Coastal Institute Auditorium at the URI Narragansett Bay Campus, 218 South Ferry Road, Narragansett, RI.

Ocean Acidification in Earth's Past: Insights to the Future
Paleoclimatologist and URI Graduate School of Oceanography alumnus, Dr. James Zachos, UC Santa Cruz, will put ocean acidification into an historical context, showing how ancient events driven by slower, natural surges in carbon serve as warnings about the impacts that today’s rapid changes could have on marine life.
All lectures will be held in the Coastal Institute Auditorium at the URI Narragansett Bay Campus, 218 South Ferry Road, Narragansett, RI.
Free and open to the public.

Digging Deep for News: New Approaches to Environmental Reporting
The Overview Project is an exciting new effort to distill large volumes of information,
allowing investigative journalists to report otherwise hidden stories. Jonathan Stray, accomplished journalist, computer scientist, and project founder, will describe how journalists can use this method to uncover critical science and policy news.
All lectures will be held in the Coastal Institute Auditorium at the URI Narragansett Bay Campus, 218 South Ferry Road, Narragansett, RI.
