Areas of Specialization
Research
Coastal zone law and management; fisheries law and management; admiralty law, including marine pollution law and marine insurance. I currently serve as Legal Counsel and Risk Manager for UNOLS, the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System, investigating legal issues that affect oceanographic research.
Teaching
I currently teach MAF 521, Coastal Zone Law, and MAF 220, Marine and Coastal Law. In previous years I have taught Fisheries Law and Management, Admiralty Law, Caribbean Geography, Politics of the Ocean, and International Law.
Outreach
Besides my work with UNOLS, I have also provided legal assistance for the AAUS, the American Academy of Underwater Science, and frequently lecture on marine law topics for the International Marina Institute, which I co-founded. I also serve as the Secretary and General Counsel of the Point Club, a self-insurance vessel cooperative serving New England fishermen.
